ADMIRALS' COAST

The Admirals' Coast
The Admirals' Coast winds along Route 60 which follows the western and
southern shore of Conception Bay between Marysvale and Paradise. The region is
a study in contrasts. The rocky harbours and bays contrast with the idyllic rural
communities which are among the best farming areas in the province, with good
soil and the best weather conditions on the Avalon Peninsula. Peaceful rural
communities, such as Harbour Main, contrast with fast growing urban centres, such
as Paradise and CBS, which are are among the fastest growing urban areas in Canada.
For modern day Admirals, there are three marinas: the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club in Manuels, CBS; the Foxtrap Marina, CBS; and the Terra Nova Yacht Club in Holyrood.
There is much to see and to do. Take a boat tour or a diving tour and view the
coastline from Conception Bay, seeing the remains of shipwrecks, while
viewing fish, seabirds and marine mammals, including whales.
Visit one of the regional museums. Learn about the history of each town.
Each
community boasts that its parks and trails are the best! The T-Railway, which
follows 20km of coastline on the former railway trail, offers amazing views of
Conception Bay. Topsail in CBS is part of the famous East Coast Trail. Paradise links into the award winning Grand Concourse Trail which is linked to St. John's and Mount Pearl.
Attend the many summer events from small town garden parties
to the Holyrood Squid Fest and the famous Kelligrews Soiree.
Experience geology
in Bacon Cove and the world famous fossil bed on the Manuels River.
History of Fishing Admirals
Fishing Admirals played an important role in the early history of the province
during the period known as the migratory fishery. At that time, settlement was
discouraged. Fishermen sailed from England in the spring, caught and cured
cod fish during the season, and returned home in the late summer with their
precious cargo of dried cod.
The captain of the first ship to arrive in the spring
became the Fishing Admiral of the harbour and had the right to make all the laws
and decisions for that season. During the long period of the migratory fishery,
Fishing Admirals had unlimited power, including the power to deal with pirates
such as Peter Easton, and any fisherman who challenged their authority.
